Identification Card in Louisiana
Many businesses and retailers require identification from the state you live in to conduct business. Most often, your driver's license provides the required documentation. You can get an identification card from the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles if you do not have a driver's license.
Requirements and Eligibility
Louisiana residents of any age may get a Louisiana identification card with the proper documentation. To apply for your first identification card, present your driver's license, two primary forms of identification or one primary and two secondary forms of identification to the OMV in person. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must also present proof that you are in the U.S. legally. If you are under 16 years old, your parents must sign the application. As of August 15, 2010, those 17 years of age no longer need a parental signature to receive an identification card.
Primary Identification
Primary identification in Louisiana includes an original or certified birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card or a certificate of naturalization. Tribal documents for Native Americans qualify as primary identification. Refugees who received a permit to enter the U.S. from the Department of Homeland Security can use this permit as primary identification.
Passports only qualify as acceptable documentation if you are 8 years old or older. If you are under 18 and do not have a birth certificate, you can use your passport accompanied by a legal certificate of guardianship.
You can use only the original Certificate of Naturalization. Copying this document is against the law.
Secondary Identification
If you have only one document that qualifies as primary identification, present it at the local OMV with two forms of secondary identification. A driver's license from another state qualifies as secondary identification, as long as the photo is clear enough to identify you and you accompany it with your driving record from the state that issued the license. Louisiana also accepts an identification card from another state or a Social Security card as secondary identification. A college student I.D. card, high school diploma, certificate of baptism, voter registration card, Medicaid card and employment I.D. with your picture also qualify.
Renewal
Louisiana offers renewal of your identification card without the need to present your qualifying documentation again. Identification cards expire after four years. As the time approaches for your renewal, you should receive an invitation to renew in the mail. Louisiana offers the option to renew via phone Interactive Voice Response (IVR), mail or over the Internet
