Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo

The Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo (monroezoo.org) is in Monroe, Louisiana. It covers 82 acres and is home to more than 440 animals. The zoo offers special education programs, petting opportunities and giraffe feedings for children throughout the year. The education programs are small, accommodating just 35 children. In this intimate setting, a zoologist can bring in four animals, which involves some interaction between the animals and children. The giraffe feeding is one of the zoo’s highlights, and though children cannot pet the giraffes, they are permitted to feed the giraffes two crackers from a platform. While most of the zoo animals cannot be touched, Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo opened a Children’s Zoo in 2011, which features four-horned sheep, pygmy goats, miniature horses and zebu cattle. Children can feed and pet most of these animals under supervision from a keeper. The zoo is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily except for New Year’s Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving.
