Neutral Ground

In the early 1800s the French and American populations of the city didn’t get along particularly well. Some major streets had a French and an American side. The middle was referred to as the “Neutral Ground” taken from Napoleon’s term for the space between opposing armies. For example the French Quarter’s famous Bourbon St. is called Carondelet St. on the “American side”
